John Lewis Partnership
Oxford Street
Value: £65m
Duration: 34 months
The refurbishment, upgrading and expansion of
the Oxford Street John Lewis store was the most
complex and intensive retail project undertaken
in a ‘live’ trading environment.
The project included major structural works
to form two new escalator atrium core areas,
including 24 of the largest escalators installed
in the UK. This was in addition to reconfiguring
department layouts, renewing the majority of
shop fitting equipment, wall, floor, and ceiling
finishes.
Asbestos is to be expected in a structure of
this age and the identification, discovery and
removal played a significant part in the planning
and execution of the works in the store.
Two existing escalator cores were removed,
a new internationally designed food hall was
created in the basement, new entrances
formed, restaurants and coffee shops were
constructed. Extensive works were undertaken
to the staff and administration areas, including
significant office fit-out to the top floors, to the
highest standards.
